WI Newsletter – February 2013

At our meetings each month, there is usually a competition and if possible these are linked to the topic of the guest speaker. This month the competition was quite simply My Grandmother (image). Obviously we were only too pleased to have an excuse to display our pictures of these much loved ladies. The competition table was full of our precious family photographs.

Hopefully, we could all name everyone on these photographs. In all probability though, I suspect we could all bring examples of our family archive with lovely group photographs, but how many of us have them in albums fully annotated with date, time and every one named. Not many I suspect. This was a lesson learnt from our speaker George Yalden, who has spent years collating a family archive using various forms of national and parish documentation, but who urged us to ask our families to help identify everyone on these photographs before it is too late.

A card was available to be signed by us all and a collection made to send some flowers to long time member June James who has left the village to live nearer her family. She will be much missed. Members were very generous with their contributions for the local Food Bank, an update was given on various events proposed for the newly merged Anton Danebury Group and Sharon King reported on her research for a summer outing on 8th August – it was agreed that we should go to Amberley Museum in the morning and Parham House in the afternoon.

Despite the cold, and snow showers, the walking group enjoyed (or was it endured!) a walk from Goodworth Clatford along the poetry trail and back – briefly passing Rooksbury Lakes, which came as a revelation to some of our members.

Our next meeting is 28th March in the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. and our speaker is John Coombes who will be giving us the A-Z of the New Forest.
