WI Newsletter – February 2014

Our speaker this month was a very colourful character – literally, Maggie Forbes with her red hair and multi-coloured trousers came to share her passion for fabric with us. Maggie cannot bear to see anything thrown away, no matter how worn or shabby, if she can salvage a scrap here and there to use to make something else she will. She produced bags created from various materials, adorned with buttons, lace and broken jewellery, evoking all sorts of memories. But, since she discovered it cannot be used as rags and ends up in landfill, her passion has been denim. Her first pair of authentic Levi jeans purchased in the USA now has a new life as a very hippy shoulder bag.

She was a ray of sunshine to end this rather wet and stormy month and delighted her audience – we couldn’t wait to speak to her afterwards and delve into her box of multi-coloured scarves which were for sale. Members could be seen strutting up and down adjusting their newly acquired colour co-ordinated neckwear!

Unfortunately, the stormy weather, earlier in the month, put paid to the walking group’s plans, but not to be done out of a chance to chat, a quick ring-round soon had a group of 11 for lunch at the Bell & Crown in Hatherden. This impromptu lunch was a combination of the lunch club & walking group eager to catch-up with Christine Fell who was making a brief visit to Abbotts Ann.

Our chosen charity to benefit from the proceeds of the monthly coffee mornings this year is Hampshire Air Ambulance, but before this was agreed, President Sue George read out a thank you letter from last year’s Charity, Andover Food Bank.

Our Secretary updated us on Anton & Danebury Group events including an outing in July to Loseley Park in Surrey and the annual Hampshire Federation quiz and skittle competitions.

If you like the taste of honey, then please come to our next meeting on 27th March as our speaker is Fred the Beekeeper.
