W.I. Newsletter December 2024

Instead of meeting for coffee and a chat, about their latest selection, our Book Club went for lunch at The Plough in Longparish this month which they thoroughly enjoyed.  There was a lot less talk about the selected book and more general chat.  The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett received a mixed critique.  One hadn’t read it all as is it didn’t appeal to her (for Christmas or otherwise) and others found the format, a series of emails, challenging.

Our December meeting was next in the diary, and we had Jake Ward, a local vocalist, come along to sing for us.  We had asked for a few Christmas songs as well as music from various decades.  He didn’t disappoint.  We had renditions from Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, John Denver as well as Abba and many others.  Sometimes, he used props to give us a clue as to what was coming next.  We were allowed to sing along with him, and he congratulated us on our timing etc. and was delighted to discover how good the acoustics are in our Village Hall.  Our members had come along in their festive wear, so initially he said he didn’t feel dressed for the occasion.  He retreated to the back of the stage and then appeared wearing a very festive colourful jacket.

Our members had all contributed to a buffet supper which was enjoyed throughout the evening, with Jake also doubling as a waiter/server on occasions!  Some of our members gave into temptation and got up to dance.   A very enjoyable evening, putting us in the party mood.

A few days later just four of us from the walking group met to do a short walk to Dobbies for a coffee and chat, before returning home to continue with our Christmas preparations and other events.

Having brought forward our annual lunch from after Christmas to the 19 December, unfortunately, only 14 of our members were able to attend a Christmas Lunch at The Poplar Farm Inn as many had other planned commitments.  Nevertheless, it was a success and enjoyed by those who attended.  In order that there is no problem in 2025 our Christmas Lunch has already been booked for Thursday 04 December at The Greyhound in Broughton.  So, ladies please make a note of this in your new diaries so there is no excuse!

We will be back in the Village Hall on 30 January when Sue George will be testing us on our general knowledge as she is currently preparing a quiz for us.  As always, we will be sat there saying, I know the answer, I just cannot recall it!  If you wish to meet us and help jog our memories, then we will be delighted to welcome you at this meeting or alternatively come to our first coffee morning of 2025 on the 09 January at 10.30 a.m.  Further information can be found below.
