W.I. Newsletter March 2025

Our members were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a good laugh at this month’s meeting courtesy of Jill Bentall and her talk entitled Growing Old Disgracefully. She delighted us by giving a humorous slant on the aging process by reading out a variety of humorous poems, verses and observations from around the world. Despite what our birth certificates tell us none of us feels that old. We still feel young inside and are keen to learn and have new experiences.

She began with Jenny Joseph’s well know poem “When I Grow Old” about wearing purple, but we also heard from Pam Ayres and George Burns. Jill advocated the reading of the magazine The Oldie, she said it was good laugh – you may see some of our members ordering this from the Village Shop. Watch out for an increase in sales Judeth!

When saying thank you to Jill, our member Lynda Goldstone, said with such an uncertain world at the moment it was a joy to come out for the evening, away from the media, and be entertained with humour.

Laughter is certainly the best medicine.  Just forget about the different colour pills some of us take to keep us going!

The meeting had been taken by Vice President Sharon King, in the absence of our President. She thanked all those who had been involved in the recent Mary Quant event which had been a great success. More can be read about this in the May edition of the Parish Magazine. However, we do have to say that we are grateful for all the support we received.  This included the Village Shop and Village Hall, who helped us sell tickets for the event, our members and others from the village who attended, as well as other Institutes and nearby villages. Also, Keith Saunders for his IT expertise. We couldn’t have achieved such a successful evening without you all. Our Committee put in a lot of effort, working as a team, to make the evening a success. Thanks, must also go to the Kirby family who worked so hard for this event. You can relax a little now Sarah!

Two of our members had attended the HCFWI Spring Meeting & AGM in Portsmouth earlier in the month. The headline speaker was Esme Young, a judge from the Great British Sewing Bee.  However, there was also a Q&A session with Nelly Ghaffar who was a contestant in the recent series of the Great British Bake Off. Both being inspirational women. It is always good to get together with members of other WIs and hear of all the opportunities available to members, as well as the various campaigns being undertaken.

Our meeting this month will be on 24 April, and we will be welcoming Sharon Kearley who is an artist with expertise in the field of Fashion, Textiles and Costume. Her subject on this occasion is “Connecting Threads”. If your interest has been piqued, then please join us in The Village Hall here in Abbotts Ann. Our meetings start at 7.30 p.m. Non-members are welcome, but there is a small charge for entry.
