THE TEST VALLEY TAPESTRY | HAMPSHIRE CULTURAL TRUST

For the first time in decades, visitors have the opportunity to see the remarkable Test Valley Tapestry at Andover Museum. Whist the embroidery has been housed at Test Valley Borough Council offices for many years, this display marks a rare chance to view this important community artwork in a museum setting.

Created in 1990 as a major community project, the Test Valley Tapestry celebrates the people, places and heritage of the borough. Often compared to the famous Bayeux Tapestry, it is in fact a large-scale embroidery produced by around 1,500 local contributors of all ages. Across 19 beautifully stitched panels, it depicts 75 of Test Valley’s towns, villages, hamlets and parishes, capturing the landscapes, landmarks and stories that make the area unique. It was first displayed at the museum upon completion.

The project was conceived and led by the late Councillor Laurie Porter and became one of the most ambitious community heritage initiatives ever undertaken in the district. The finished work not only celebrated the rich history of Test Valley but also inspired a book, postcards and even a musical composition, ensuring its legacy could be shared with future generations.

Now, after spending decades on display by appointment only, the Test Valley Tapestry is once again available for visitors to enjoy. This special display offers a unique chance to appreciate the extraordinary craftsmanship, creativity and community spirit woven into every panel.

Whether you’re keen to spot your local village, discover familiar landmarks, or simply admire an outstanding piece of local heritage, the Test Valley Tapestry provides a fascinating snapshot of life across the borough and a celebration of the communities that came together to create it.

Admission is free. Come and discover this remarkable work of art and local history at Andover Museum while it is on display.  The Museum is located at 6 Church Close, Andover SP10 1DP with free on-site parking and is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
