W.I. Newsletter August 2023

At last, we managed to fill a coach and set off on a summer outing to Windsor Castle this month   Since Covid struck in 2020 we have had to abort two scheduled trips, but third time lucky.  With support from members, villagers, friends, family and others we had enough people to make it viable financially.

Lynda Goldstone did a great job organising the coach, pick-up points and booking us into the Castle.  The day went very well, we were using a different coach company – Mervyn’s – and the coach and driver turned up promptly and off we set.  We arrived in the car park in good time with no traffic hold-ups, just a slight diversion with a road closure as we approached the town centre.

Most of us were going to visit the Castle, but beforehand there was time for a quick coffee for those needing refreshment and a stroll through the shops (remember those!) that still exist.  Fortunately, we arrived in time for the Change of Guard ceremony which attracted a large audience.

The Castle did not disappoint – the splendid restoration since the fire of 1992 is amazing and there is so much to see.  A visit to St. George’s Chapel included the opportunity to file past the final resting place of our late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.  A solemn moment – even though it was a very busy day with many tourists in the town.

Thank you to Lynda for organising us and to everyone who supported us on the day.    Watch this space for our next adventure.

There was no formal meeting this month, but we still met for our coffee morning which proved particularly popular this month and the walking group enjoyed a ramble in Wherwell.  We did get a little wet for a while, but carried on regardless and finished in the dry.  As always, we began and finished at a pub.

Our meeting next month is on 28th September when we will be welcoming our speaker artist Alison Hulme who has a passion for both nature and textiles.   Please come to the Village Hall in time for a 7.30 p.m. start.  We would be delighted to see you there and welcome visitors.
