WI Newsletter – August 2010

There is a myth that not much happens during August in the WI World. This is so not true here in Abbotts Ann; although along with most Institutes, we do not have a meeting this month, there is still plenty going on behind the scenes.

On the 4th August we travelled to Windsor, primarily to visit the Castle, but there was still time for retail therapy for some, in an attempt to find last minute sale bargains. Others ventured across the River Thames to visit Eton.

Christine Fell hosted our coffee morning this month and the walkers ambled around Kings Somborne, whilst the reading group met to discuss The Other side of the Bridge by Mary Lawson. At the moment they are Digging to America with Anne Tyler and will come together next month to give their opinion on that novel.

Preparations are continuing for the fete refreshments, emails have been sent pleading for more cakes as the usual panic ensues as to whether we will have enough. Lists of provisions have been updated and supplies checked; our fingers are now crossed for a fine day and plenty of visitors

The Programme Planning sub-Committee have met three times during July & August (in reality it means four of have an excuse to get together for a drink and chat), and speakers are now in place for the next 18 months. The draft programme will be presented to the committee in September.

Ashley Smith from The Hawk Conservancy is our guest speaker at our next meeting on 30th September, but we have no idea whether or not he is bringing a bird or two with him?!
